‘The Third Eye’ by Lois Duncan
Grade: B
‘The Third Eye’ by Lois Duncan was one of the entertaining novels I’ve yet to read. It is short yet full of mystery and suspense which I really like. When I read the first few pages, it was pretty much monotonous and boring with the usual high school love story, prompting me to pause my reading for a while. Later on, I resumed reading the novel. The characters were beginning to develop and a little suspense was added when Bobby was missing from the family for hours.
There were a few reasons why I enjoyed reading ‘The Third Eye.’ Firstly, Karen’s astonishing ability to perceive what will happen with her ‘third eye’ got my attention. Not only does it help saved the lives of the children throughout the story, but it made Karen much more conscious about the things that she had neglected beforehand while dating Tim. Although she was labeled as a freak due to her eccentricity, she was not defaming the community where she lived in. Instead, she helped the parents locating back their missing children. In addition, I also like the fact that she had visions of her future daughter, though she did not realize that at first. It showed how people who have abnormalities can still live a life with their loved ones without any danger or fear.
Though the book was amusing to read, I was upset that it barely had any horror aspects to it. This book wasn’t as scary as I thought it would have been. Although I haven’t read any other books from Lois Duncan, I’m pretty sure that this is not his best book since it does lack anticipation. Nevertheless, this book is worthy to receive a high review from young adults, since it is a fairly entertaining read.
